Six Feet Under - Next To Die
Not that I had expectations beyond "this will be recorded sound," but the new Six Feet Under is tremendously low effort and bad. The riffs and production can only be described as royalty-free death metal.
Most of this band's output has been bad (13 was a decent album), but there would be the odd decent instrumental track here and there. Even that is gone.
A song like "Mister Blood and Guts" is almost enough to make me think this has been a decades-long bit. This material is the kind of stuff a YouTuber would bang out in 15 minutes to lampoon the genre.
Imagine Andy Kaufman, if he wrote a song called "Necropedophile." Which, I suppose could just be Andy Kaufman on a long enough timeline...
Every track feels like it's a demo, at the point in songwriting before the good parts of the song are laid down. The riffs are as basic as it gets; each song is extremely low-tempo — and Barnes can barely keep up in his atonal, rhythm-adjacent cadence. I have heard dozens of local openers at death metal shows who all sound significantly better and more polished than this.
Terrible record, even by the ... standards of past output from this band.
