Just like that, it’s February and the first pay-per-view of the year is upon us. There has been a lot of talk about proposed UFC “super fights” between several of the current champions. While many — if not all of them — are destined never to happen, we’ve got a close approximation of a super fight in the main event of UFC 156. Rounding out a card featuring two of the best pound-for-pound lighter weight fighters in the world is the return of Alistair Overeem, and a very solid under card.

In a week jam-packed with MMA content, the UFC deliver it’s sixth edition of UFC on Fox headlined by a five round tilt for the organisation’s Flyweight Title. Rounding out the card is the alleged farewell bout for Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, and a throwback fight for WEC fans in Donald Cerrone versus Anthony Pettis. Sprinkled over Facebook / YouTube, FX Network and Fox Sports, UFC on Fox 6 featured a really solid line-up of new talent and tenured veterans.

We’re trying something new with the first UFC on FX broadcast of the year, and running a recap of the event. Unlike the UFC’s pay-per-view offerings, there won’t be prediction articles in advance of the event, but the events themselves will be recapped. The seventh installment of UFC on FX will be the first, but others will be included depending on my ability to watch them in real-time.

The calendar year of 2012 is finally in the books, and to say it’s been a strange year in mixed martial arts would be an extreme understatement. Closing out the year in MMA, UFC 155 delivered a mixed bag of results. Aside from some really, really questionable scorecards from the judges, the undercard had some lackluster moments but overall was fairly entertaining. The pay-per-view card looked to be a train wreck in the making until Miller and Lauzon delivered a three round Fight of the Night.

With a mere two days left in the calendar year, the UFC turns in their final pay-per-view offering of 2012 in the form of UFC 155. It wouldn’t be a 2012 UFC card without mentioning that a number of injuries have resulted in changes to the initially planned fight card, but we’ve still got some very interesting bouts on our hands here.
