Words and things, mostly words.
Today was a bit of a rough day for anyone really attached to the 90s. I can’t say I really count myself among the ranks of the decade’s fans, but I did grow up in that time, and it’s a little weird to see a pair of huge stars of that era dead already.
I remember spending a lot of time watching Much Music (the Canadian MTV), and The Prodigy were played very regularly — I remember “Breathe” and “Firestarter” when they were brand new singles. They were a group I listened to quite a bit despite never owning any of their albums. They just seemed to be priming the machine for a comeback, and then Flint apparently committed suicide at the age of 49.
As for Perry, I never really followed his career either. I remember how immensely popular Beverly Hills 90210 was at the time, but I never watched it. I assumed Perry was just another pretty-boy jackass until his small appearance on The Simpsons. I had to give him begrudging respect for being able to laugh at himself like that. I didn’t see or think about him again until he appeared on Oz, playing a criminal evangelist to perfection.
Two very disparate talents, but both affected a lot of people’s lives with their work. Both also died far too young. I feel old right now — older than I should.
