Words and things, mostly words.
Although the UFC’s run on FOX has been an interesting experiment — and ultimately cemented MMA in the mainstream — I think there’s a nearly equal amount of bad mixed in with the good. The pacing of the majority of the broadcasts was a grind, and as the UFC’s deal progressed we got fewer and fewer big fights, and eventually the notion of titles being defended on TV became a thing of the past. Some of that has to do with the UFC pushing Demetrious Johnson to pay-per-view, despite his ability to draw decent TV ratings and his own reticence to headline PPV shows.
As per my Fight Notes entry for this show, it was a good event with a lot to talk about. I summed up most of my thoughts in that piece, though I will elaborate on a few things when we get closer to the end of the year.
We’ll see how things go on ESPN, but I think the most reasonable expectation is that we’re going to get more of the same — including 6-fight main cards that start at 10pm EST.
