Coder Atrophy

Ever since I graduated from college, almost 13 years ago (damn, that makes me feel old), I’ve never really used the coding skills I picked up in the program I completed. By the time I got out of school, Nortel was imploding and I never happened upon any Junior Developer positions that ended up panning out. I worked a variety of jobs from the time of graduation — when I was already living on my own — but never in a position which directly used those skills.

I’ve written tools to make some of my jobs easier, and continue to do so to this day, but I haven’t expanded my knowledge much. Everything I do is in C#, using the single design pattern I remember from college — for which I have no actual name. I’m able to build what I need, but I’ve always felt like a complete novice and never felt comfortable putting myself forward as any sort of software developer. I need to change that, and acquire both a greater variety of skills but also a greater understanding of what it is I am doing.

If all goes well, I’ll be posting my projects here as I try to expand my knowledge and add additional functionality to the site.
