Dismemberment In Self-Defence

Somehow, this saga is still unfolding — and not getting any less ridiculous in the process. After initially denying involvement in the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi for two weeks, the Saudi Arabian government has since issued statements that Khashoggi’s death was an accident. Apparently Khashoggi decided to try and fight 15 people for some reason, and was killed in a fist-fight. Or a chokehold. And then dismembered him with the bone saw they just happened to bring with them for some reason…

Initially, President Donald Trump appeared to accept this ridiculous, embarrassingly flimsy explanation, however he seems to have backtracked on that. Other countries have also stated their own disbelief of these so-called ‘explanations.’ Meanwhile, on Twitter — and throughout the media world writ large — the KSA’s various propaganda farms have been working overtime to cast aspersions on Khashoggi and redirect attention to the purported utility of the Kingdom in the War on Terror and its penchant for billion-dollar arms deals.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this story continues to develop, the international pressure on Saudi Arabia seems to have caught MBS off-guard and shows no sign of abating just yet. Furthermore, the United StatesĀ really needs the KSA to make-up the difference in oil production as they continue to box Iran into a corner and cut them off from the world market. There are a lot of moving pieces here, but luckily the KSA and US have wise, level-headed leaders guiding the machinery of their respective governments…
